Tasting notes
Nose: This is sweet and ashy. At first there’s a mix of warm ashy peat, burnt hay and a vanilla and honey sweetness. Underneath there’s a hint of baked red apples. In the background there’s a dry soil earthiness coming through. With time in the glass the ashy notes increase in intensity. This is a nice, very straight forward peat dominant nose without any perticular complexity.

Mouth: It starts out sweet and quite spicy. The peatiness is strong and creates a thick outside layer. The core reveals ripe apples and a hint of toffee. There’s a lemon zest sour and bitter side to it in the back which actually fits rather nice together with the otherwise warm and thick profile. It still lacks a bit of complexity but it has a nice texture to it. There is a spirity youthness which do come through after a few seconds but the cask influence and the heavy peat do a good job of covering it up.

Finish: The sweetness slowly turns towards toffee and there is a small spike in the spicyness. The peatiness remains as a thick outside layer throughout the transition. The oakiness emerges from the ashy peat notes and after a few seconds there’s a burnt oakiness with vanilla dominating the finish. The fruitiness disappears quickly but the lemon notes in the back stays and turns a tiny bit metallic when everything else dies down. This is a very nice and well made whisky even though the young age is shining through.

Additional information
The Saligo Bay was originally released as a travel retail exclusive. It’s aged for 5 years in ex-bourbon barrels. It’s unchillfiltered and has natural colour.

Tasting notes
Nose: This is sweet and ashy. At first there’s a mild and sweet center core with a soft berry fruitiness, vanilla and oak. On the outside there’s a layer of peat with ashy notes towards the edges and savory ones nearer the middle part. When it settles a very young and spirity distillate shines through and the the top layer gets more accentuated with ashes, peat, vanilla and oak. The sherry notes are quite subdued but mixes nicely with the other notes. This is a good nose which comes through as a bit too young to be great.

Mouth: It starts out with a heavy peatiness with a mix of ashes and minerals attached to it. It feels really young and spirity at this point. There’s a sweet and soft fruitiness with red berries and a slight nuttiness, but it’s not enough to hide a harsh spirit note. There’s a bitter note in the back and the peatiness increases in intensity throughout and a savory note is floating around which really doesn’t make any sense.

Finish: There’s a nice amount of spicyness showing up through the transition. The middle part becomes larger and now presents a mix of vanilla, honey, gentle fruits and earthy peat. The outside stays the same as before with the ashy notes on the edges. A floral note is hiding somewhere in between. The late finish is not the most interesting part. It’s the same notes fading out and they leave peat and oak behind. It’s a nice enough oak. This is a good whisky. It’s too young and not very balanced, but offer a nice peat punch whenever one needs it.

Additional information
This whisky was aged in a mix of ex-bourbon, ex-Oloroso and ex-PX casks for an undisclosed amount of time. Batch size was 1260 bottles. It’s unchillfiltered and has natural colour.

Tasting notes
Nose: This is sweet and peaty. At first there’s a big dollop of an ash and dry soil peatiness. When it settles a sweet honey and vanilla layer starts to fight for attention and pushes the peatiness out towards the edges. Underneath the big flavours a fresh and sour fruitiness peeks through. It’s lemon and a hint of sour apples. It feels young and lively but it doesn’t present any metallic or ethanol harshness. This is a simple yet effective nose with a high emphasis on the peat.

Mouth: It starts out with a sweet outside layer together with a quite medicinal and dry iodine note with a sprinkle of salt somewhere within. After a few seconds vanilla arrives in the center and with time it evolves more towards a butterscotch note. It’s a lot less sweet compared to the nose. The ashy side of the peat is residing in the back together with a savory note. The sour fruitiness is still found in the back but it comes through together with a small metallic note and a zesty bitterness. For those who wait a nice chili spicyness builds up over time.

Finish: The finish is a straight line continuation from the mouth. There’s still the dry medicinal notes on the edges, a savory peat in the back together with a zesty bitter lemon. The chili spicyness is nice and spreads out over the palate but never gets spiky or unpleasant. The butterscotch notes are first to disappear and soon it’s only the medicinal peat and a quite anonymous and boring oakiness left. This is a good whisky in many ways but it feels a bit unfinished and young which is good for the peatiness but bad for the rest of the dram.

Additional information
The Machir Bay is the Kilchoman core range signature malt. It’s a vatting between ex-bourbon barrels and ex-sherry . It leans heavily towards the ex-bourbon. It’s unchillfiltered and has natural colour.
