Tasting notes
Nose: This is very sweet and fruity. At first there’s a thick lid of clingy sweetness and fruits. It’s honey, vanilla and ripe red berries. It’s very top heavy and it takes a while before the background notes start to appear. There’s a sweet liquorice coming through as well as a small string of fresher, less sweet fruits. They are overrun by the thick sweetness though. It’s very dessert-like and it feels very manufactured. There are malt and marzipan in the mix as well. This is a nice nose, but it feels more like sherry syryp than whisky.

Mouth: It starts out with the same thick sweet mix of honey, vanilla and sweet ripe red fruits and berries. It’s mainly overripe plums and baked red apples and now mixed with a hint of leather and tobacco. It’s still extremely top heavy. There’s a nice spicy power to it which gives a nice relief from the thick swetness. The whole has got a nice oily texture and when the background notes of malt, fresher fruits and a slight bitter tang peek through it feels like it’s not enough. It feels quite unbalanced.

Finish: The transition is very nice, with a warm slow increase in spicyness. The thick and sweet lid finally lets go and there is a nice mix of liquorice, leather and tobacco together with a nice array of fresh and ripe fruits appearing. The late finish is very nice and finally it becomes balanced. The oakiness feels competent and has both a new oak vibe to it as well as a nutty, older side. This is a very good whisky, but it feels unbalanced and over-sherried. It should be very approachable to people who are new to whisky. It could use a splash of water for that though.

Tasting notes
Nose: This is sweet and fruity. Vanilla and liqueur-soaked berries lead way into a mild and laid back start. There’s a layer of honey and a hint of dust sitting in top and a darker fruitiness lurks in the background with hints of raisins and ripe plums. A sweet liquorice note comes through somewhere in the middle. There’s also a floral element with a hint of violets. This is very mild and approachable.

Mouth: A very muted start soon moves over to a thick maltiness and a touch of chili fruits. Vanilla, honey and liquorice are in there together with milk chocolate. The fruitiness stays the same as on the nose with darker fruits and raisins. The floral element is completely gone. There is a brighter fruitiness, but it is buried behind the darker, sweeter notes. The oak comes through after a few seconds. It’s a fresh oakiness and it seems to brings some anise with it.

Finish: A bit uneventful at first and the chili spicyness is subsiding as the seconds goes by. A fudge note with vanilla and honey arrives first and then soon after the liqueur-soaked berries and raisins join in. It takes a while for the oakiness to appear and when it does, it’s a bit muted and slightly dry. There’s no astringency though, but there is a nutty side to it which lean towards hazelnuts. There is also an odd note of a newly sharpened pencil in the late finish. Overall it’s a good whisky, but it is a bit underwhelming.

GlenRothes Robur Reserve

ABV: 40 %
Origin: Speyside
Type: Single malt

Tasting notes
Nose: This is sweet and fruity. At first there are a lot of vanilla, red berries and oranges. Just underneath lies a thin layer of darker ripe plums and raisins. There’s also a floral note somewhere in between. It’s got a light character with a minty note on top but there’s a slightly complex sulfur and malt note coming from the background which gives it a nice three-dimensional character, but it’s fighting against a younger distillate with some sharp egdes to it. This is a nice nose overall. It feels a bit rough around the edges though.

Mouth: It starts out with a mild vanilla and malt sweetness on top with dried fruits and a hint of sulfur in the back. The fresher fruits have taken a step back, but there is a hint of orange peel and lemon in the back. It’s very round, easy to approach and gives a nice setting for the sherry cask notes which at this point covers the slight harshness of the somewhat young distillate.

Finish: The initial impact is a bit too mild and weak. It takes a second before the malt and the vanilla starts to awaken and for the fruitiness to return. The fruitiness is now spreading out in the background with mainly an orange peel fruity bitter note. It co-exists with a nice nutty oakiness and a slightly savory note in the back. The oakiness slowly moves forwards and the late finish is very nice. This is a good whisky with a lot to offer despite the low ABV. It ought to be a good introduction to sherried whiskies.
