Tasting notes
Nose: This is sweet and peaty. At first there’s a very sweet honey and vanilla sweetness which has a deep and quite hefty pettiness. The peat comes through as a mix of burnt oak, leather and a medicinal side note. It’s quite powerful and everything about the nose is big and bold. The top notes are minty and fresh. This is a great nose which delivers exactly what’s expected. It’s simple yet effective.
Mouth: It starts out with a leathery peat note and a big sweetness. It soon becomes very spicy and the heavy peatiness comes rushing in. Just as the nose it’s very big and powerful. The peat has the same character but has more burnt oak within. There’s a complexity within with some more meaty flavours but they are a bit harder to get to. The sweetness drops after a few seconds to make room for everything else.
Finish: The transition creates an increase in spicyness and soon dries out the mouth. The peat becomes more medicinal and the oakiness separates from the peat to become its own thing. There’s still a sweetness but’s no longer a major factor. The late finish is a nice, yet slightly uninteresting oakiness and a leathery note in the back. The finish is long and quite generous. This is a great yet simple whisky which has a clear target and it delivers to the point.
