Kilchoman Sanaig

ABV: 46 %
Origin: Islay
Type: Single malt
Bottles in collection: 0
Emptied bottles: 0
Impression: 4/5

Tasting notes
Nose: This is fresh and peaty with a youthness to it. The peat is a warm, burning woodfire and vanilla incense. It’s got a very sweet aura with honey and sherry notes, which are well hidden at first. They never take over but hints of blueberry juice and some plums are peeking through and somehow create a nice layer in the back. The peat delivers some ashy notes after some time in the glass.

Mouth: It starts out mild with a lemon note coming through before the sweetness takes over. It’s vanilla heavy with honey and burning wood accents. The texture is oily and there are savory notes deep within. A spicyness builds up over time but it never covers the other flavours. The sherry notes are still hiding behind the honey, making it hard to pinpoint. It’s very integrated into the honey and vanilla. Some raisins seem to come through after a few sips though. A cardboard note sits in the back of the palate and that brings it down a notch.

Finish: A peppery note comes through before it lands straight into the oak. The sweetness and the peat notes return and they are very consistant throughout. The raisins seem to refuse to come forward from behind the honey, but they do make their presence known. The finish also offer a quite noticable layer of lemon juice around the edges and that note survives when everything else dies down.

Additional information
The Sanaig is part of Kilchoman’s core range. It’s aged in European ex-Oloroso sherry casks and american ex-bourbon barrels separatly. They are vatted together with a higher proportion of sherry casks. The Peat level is 50 ppm. It’s unchillfiltered and has natural colour.

Bowmore 18 YO – Deep & Complex

ABV: 43 %
Origin: Islay
Type: Single Malt
Bottles in collection: 0
Emptied bottles: 0
Impression: 5/5

Tasting notes
Nose: A very thick dark fruitiness with raisins, plums and ripe berries creates a thick layer covering everything on approach. Smoke coming from a warm burning campfire creates a nice setting together with a salty seashore note. A tropical fruitiness with pinapple and mangos sits in the middle with vanilla, lime and sweet black liquorice. The oak peeks through but it’s not pronounced. There’s a hint of menthol creating a freshness to the whole. It’s a pleasant nosing, but it feels like there’s a distance between the sherry overtone and the rest of the dram.

Mouth: It starts out very sweet and the vanilla steps forward at first. The texture is thick and oily and it shows its age with a hefty dustiness. There are both ripe and dried fruits together with fresh red berries and a lot of tropical fruitiness. It’s salty and somewhat astringent. The oak is old, grey and weathered. There’s almost no peat flavours, just a hint of leather in the background.

Finish: The finish starts out with a big bowl of tropical fruits and the campfire smoke finally returns. The oak is dusty and got some astringency to it. It’s still grey and weathered and there’s a hint of bitterness with walnuts within. The very long and pleasant finish carries all the fruity flavours all the way through. The menthol returns in the tail end and creates a veil over all the fruits and the oak.

Additional information
This expression was released in 2017 as a part of Bowmore’s travel retail range. It’s matured in a combination of ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry and ex-Oloroso sherry casks.

Laphroaig The 1815 Legacy Edition

ABV: 48 %
Origin: Islay
Type: Single malt
Bottles in collection: 0
Emptied bottles: 0
Impression: 4/5

Tasting notes
Nose: This is peaty and oaky. At first there are smoke and ashes from a burnt out campfire together with iodine and salt. Behind that there’s a hay note together with some honey and vanilla. There’s a clear oakiness shining through all the way from the start. A fresh peppermint is peeking through from the back together with a thin layer of fruitiness. It’s hard to pick out a specific fruit, but I get a hint of raspberries and maybe a hint of mango.

Mouth: A wet hay together with burnt out coal makes the peatiness thick and dense. There’s a lemon note piercing through. It’s somewhat spicy and the salt, iodine and the vanilla notes are still in there. It’s very bitter and the oak is spreading out in the background. The honey is in there too and it gets sweeter with time in the glass. The fruitiness is basically nowhere to be found at this point.

Finish: It starts out with a big dip in flavour but soon pick up pace again. The spicyness comes first followed by the heavy bitterness and after that the peat notes follow. The finish is filled with espresso, iodine and wet hay. The oak itself is fairly invisible for a long time. When all other flavours reside a vague honey sweetness reappears together with a hint of fruit and the long sought after oakiness. It’s quite nice in the tail end.

Additional information
The 1815 Legacy edition is first aged in first fill american ex-bourbon barrels and then finished in new european hogsheads. It’s unchillfiltered. Some sources say that this is the same whisky as the An Cuan Mòr.

McClelland’s Islay Single Malt

ABV: 40 %
Origin: Islay
Type: Single Malt
Bottles in collection: 0
Emptied bottles: 0
Impression: 2/5

Tasting notes
Nose: At first, there’s a savory and grassy peat note coming through, but it’s quite thin on the nose overall. Some fruitiness can be found but it’s so feint it cannot specified. There are also hints of vanilla, honey and butterscotch.

Mouth: This a thin maltiness swimming in water together with vanilla and butterscotch notes. It almost feels like there’s grain spirit in it which can be connected to the presumed young age. An assorted fruit note comes through with a hint of cinnamon. The peat smoke is a bit toned down and it’s very mild.

Finish: Surprisingly, there are nice tropical fruit notes appearing, but they disappear quite quickly and leave a bland oak note and some ashy leftovers from the peat. Overall it’s not a bad array of flavours, it’s just muted, like listening to music through a wall.

Additional information
The content in this bottle isn’t disclosed, but the brand McClelland’s is owned by Morrison Bowmore, so it’s a good bet that the content comes from the Bowmore distillery.

Douglas Laing’s Big Peat

ABV: 46 %
Origin: Islay
Type: Blended Malt
Bottles in collection: 0
Emptied bottles: 0
Impression: 4/5

Tasting notes
Nose: It starts with a heavy and dense smokiness with honeyglazed bacon and the ashy notes of a campfire just about to die out. When the first impact subsides there’s lemon juice and a whiff of the sea (like being on the shore on a cold, windy day) in the back.

Mouth: It starts out very sweet and ashy. It’s savory with a nice honey and vanilla touch to it. It’s surprisingly mild but still manages to give a big bold array of smoke flavours. Some spicyness arrive late and it’s not a big part of the experience.

Finish: The smoke notes change slightly towards tobacco and a hint of rubber. It’s still savory and ashy though. This is very much a peaty fanfare with just a touch of salt and lemon. The oak note is very well hidden, but shows up as a slight astringency in the tail of the finish.

Additional information

Laphroaig PX Cask

ABV: 48 %
Origin: Islay
Type: Single malt
Bottles in collection: 0
Emptied bottles: 0
Impression: 4/5

Tasting notes
Nose: This is medicinal peat and dried fruits. Smoke and ashes coming from the remains of a campfire is immediate and very dominant but well balanced against both red ripe and fresh fruits. The fruits are complemented by a honey sweetness. There’s also medicinal notes with iodine in front. It’s earthy with a hint of dry soil and sand together with a salty breeze from an open sea.

Mouth: The fruity side takes front with a nice ”funky” complex note coming from the ripe fruits together with the richness of the peat. The peat notes now steer towards dry ashes. It’s still earthy with a dry soil feel to it and it’s still salty. There’s a red chili spicyness coming through and a nice oakiness that builds up over time in the mouth.

Finish: A big burst of heavy peat notes together with iodine and brine. The red fruits gets mixed with fresh tropical fruits (mango and pinapple), which comes through with the oak. It’s a long, nice oaky finish with the ashy burnt out campfire lingering for a long time.

Laphroaig Brodir – Port Cask Finish

ABV: 48 %
Origin: Islay
Type: Single malt
Bottles in collection: 0
Emptied bottles: 0
Impression: 4/5

Tasting notes
Nose: This is sweet and ashy. A cold, put out, ashy campfire is first to arrive together with a funky sweet red berry note. It’s medicinal and iodine and brine are sitting in the middle of it all. After a few seconds dark fruits come through mixed with a quite pronounced vanilla note. Liqueur-soaked cherries and sweet liquorice are also found which make it a bit rounder. This is very approachable.

Mouth: It starts out very sweet and ashy. It’s slightly spicy with a black pepper touch to it. It still produces plenty of dark fruit notes and a nice vanilla layer surrounding everything. It’s not as medicinal and salty as on the nose and there’s a tiny hint of toffee coming through together with the liqueur-soaked cherries and the vanilla. It’s a touch dry, but there’s no astringency.

Finish: A big ashy peat punch is followed by a very sweet note of the same sweet, ripe, darker fruits together with vanilla and now also with honey. The ashy note steps to the side, but still holds its ground. A tropical fruit note appears together with a nice oaky finish. The funky sweet notes with red berries return in the late finish and lingers in the background while the oakiness slowly subsides. This is a great, approachable version of Laphroaig.

Bowmore 15 YO – Darkest

ABV: 43 %
Origin: Islay
Type: Single Malt
Bottles in collection: 0
Emptied bottles: 1
Impression: 5/5

Tasting notes
Nose: This is a big bowl of assorted fruits with a baseline of tobacco, leather and smoke from a hot, burning campfire. There’s tropical fruits, red berries and darker notes with ripe plums and raisins. The sweetness comes as white chocolate and vanilla surrounding the fruits. This is extremely pleasant and well balanced on the nose.

Mouth: Lemon sour approach with the leather and tobacco notes up front. It comes with some spicyness and a tiny amount of coffee bitterness. The ripe plums together with the tropical fruits are pushing forwards together with a speck of dust tagging along. It’s not as sweet as the nose would suggest. The oak can be noticed in the background. It’s not dry nor astringent, but brings the bitter tone to the mix. There’s also a salty caramel note laying as a thin layer on top of everything.

Finish: The darker sherry notes move forward together with the now refined tobacco notes. The tropical fruitiness comes as a wave rolling through together with some spicyness just before the oak finish takes over. The oak comes with espresso and the chocolate has now switched from white to dark. It’s a long finish which rewards the flavour seeker. All the fruitiness can be found over and over again all the way to the end.
