Tasting notes
Nose: This is sweet and oaky. At first there’s a thick honey and berry note mixed with a sawdust oakiness. Underneath there’s a darker section with coffee, raisins and cocoa. Everything feels young and the cask notes feels extremely superficial. With time in the glass it becomes sweeter and vanilla heavy with a butterscotch side to it. It lacks richness and complexity. This is a so-and-so nose which has all the telltale signs of small cask maturation.

Mouth: It starts out with a heavy oakiness coating the outside of the palate together with a nice peppery spicyness. The sherry notes are there but are drowned out. A hint of cocoa, raisins and butterscotch, assorted dried fruits fight to get noticed in the center but the outside oak gets all the attention. The whole is rough and lacks sophistication.

Finish: The spicyness spreads out and mellows through the transition. There’s a swift second of fresh red berries before the heavy oakiness once again creates unpleasantries. The darker sherry notes, mainly the cocoa and raisins, fight through once again but soon have to give in. The late oakiness sees a slight nuttiness but is still making the whole experience utterly unbalanced. This is a so-and-so whisky which is over-oaked and top heavy.
