Tasting notes
Nose: This is sweet and sour. At first there’s a mix of honey and malt with a minty overlay. As it settles in the glass vanilla and lemon start to take over. There’s a hint of coconut in the center. It feels very clean and well made. It’s a simple profile but it does its job competently. This is a good nose overall with easily distinguishable parts, but it becomes slightly boring for the explorer.

Mouth: It starts out with a mild peppery spicyness surrounding a sweet honey note in the center. After a few seconds the lemon sourness arrive in the back together with a bitter, nutty note. The maltiness is still in there and there’s a sweet liquorice and a hint of salt as well. It’s a bit more complex in taste which makes it quite interesting.

Finish: The peppery spicyness floats out over the palate and the clean distillate shines through for a second or two. The bitterness returns in the back and the lemon note does so as well, yet muted. There’s a slight grassy note floating around, and maybe a hint of ginger and toffee as well. When the oak comes it brings back the coconut as well as the nuttiness. It’s a nice oakiness and a nice lingering finish. This is a great whisky. The journey starts simple but enda a lot more interesting.

Tasting notes
Nose: This is sweet and fruity. At first theres’s a big honey, vanilla and baked red apples mix. When it starts to settle there are notes of ginger and cinnamon added. An old, slightly dusty oakiness floats around in the back. With time it becomes slightly malty and a fresh tropical fruitiness gets added to the mix. It’s has a peppery top note which gives it a nice touch. This is a fantastic nose with a great mix of sensations.

Mouth: It starts out with a lemony background and a dusty maltiness in the middle. There are ginger, honey, vanilla, pipe tobacco and almonds in the center. It shows its age immidiatly with the dusty character and an old oakiness gently sprinkled within. There are still baked apples and cinnamon  and a mild tropical fruitiness. It still delivers a nice peppery spicyness which never become unpleasant but still gives it a really nice sense of power. It feels rich and has an oily texture adding to the experience.

Finish: The tranision is logical and the spicyness remain constant. The lemon in the back are also retaining the same level of intensity throughout the early finish. All the main flavours gently fade in the center and the old dusty oakiness, which seems to be mixed with a newer oak, slowly take over coming from the back moving forwards. It’s a really pleasant oakiness with a mix of old and new. It becomes slightly astringent after a while. This is an amazing whisky with an extremely well thoughout balance and character. It’s very easy to sip, yet has a lot to explore. The perfect mix.

Deanston Virgin Oak

Origin: Highlands

Tasting notes
Nose: This is young and spirity. At first there’s a vanilla and honey oakiness and a clean young distillate coming through. There’s a green apple note but it’s very feint and it sits in the center together with an equally thin toffee note. After some time in the glass there are notes of lemongrass and liquorice appearing. This is not a complex nor especially interesting nose.

Mouth: It starts out with a honey sweetness and a fresh maltiness. There’s a toffee layer and a tang of sour lemon on the sides. The oak is ever so present and gives it a nice fresh frame. It’s got some ABV spiciness together with a mix of kitchen spices and a hint of cinnamon. It doesn’t hide its young spirit, but it’s a clean and well made distillate.

Finish: The toffee and the maltiness is first to come through and the lemon sourness is still covering the sides. After a second or two the oak completely takes over. It’s still a very fresh woodshop oakiness. It becomes slightly astringent down the line. When the oak flavours start to subside the maltiness returns once again and gives it a beer like finish. This is a rowdy, young and unapologetic whisky. It’s not complex, but it covers some ground by being well made and nicely presented.
