Tasting notes
Nose: This is dark and fruity. At first there are tropical fruits mixed with raisins and dark chocolate. Honey, vanilla and black liquorice sits in the back and create a nice rich backdrop. A brigther note of red berries with some raspberries sort of comes and goes on top of the dark fruitiness. The peat manifests as a leather note and sits in between the layers of sweetness. The focus lies on the heavy sherry overlay.

Mouth: At first honey, red berries and a slight bitterness turn up. It then slowly changes into black liquorice, vanilla and raisins. There’s a lemon note surrounding the other flavours. The oakiness comes through together with leather and tropical fruits. It’s a nice oakiness with a slight bitterness that sits well with the other flavours.

Finish: A thin note of menthol passes by before moving directly into a big bowl of assorted tropical fruits. The oakiness comes through as well as the darker sherry notes and the leather, but the main focus is all about the pineapples and mangos and a slight hint of grapefruits. There’s a chalk note sitting on top of the oak in the finish and the oak is somewhat dry and bitter with some coffee and hazelnuts. There’s no astringency until after a few sips. This is very good for an entry level NAS travel retail release.

Additional information
Black Rock is the entry level of the travel retail exclusive range released in 2014. It’s primarily aged in ex-sherry casks. It was discontinued in 2017.

Ardbeg 5 YO – Wee Beastie

Tasting notes
Nose: This is peaty and medicinal. At first there are notes of seaweed, minerals and smoke from a hot burning campfire. In the background there’s a sweetness with vanilla and unscented hand lotion attached to it. It’s young and quite rowdy even though there’s a very thin but dampering layer of red berries resting on top of everything else. It still leans very heavy towards the distillate and not on the cask influence. With time in the glass the minerals and a hint of iodine moves forward. This is an unsettled dram, but it’s still a welcoming and interesting nose.

Mouth: It starts out quite spicy and medicinal. It takes a second or two for the sweetness to come through and when it does, it never really becomes more than a background noise. It’s salty and the seaweed is still in there, but it’s not as coastal as the nose suggest. The campfire smoke is now creating an outer layer surrounding everything. After a second or two there is a slight ripe and dark fruitiness floating around in the back together with the vanilla sweetness and a hint of dark chocolate.

Finish: It starts out by presenting all the background flavours without anything up front. It’s a combined layer of vanilla and unscented lotion, ripe dark fruits, dark chocolate and burnt oak. After a few second the main flavours start to build up. It produces the same flavours once again with seaweed, minerals, iodine and seasalt. There is a metallic note coming through in the late finish which gives away the young age. This is not a balanced and well behaved whisky. It’s young and rowdy both in smell and taste, but it still produces a nice experience.

Additional information
Wee Beastie was added to the Ardbeg core range in 2020. It’s aged in a mix of ex-bourbon barrels and ex-Oloroso sherry butts. It’s unchillfiltered and has natural colour.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask

Tasting notes
Nose: This is sweet and very peaty. A powerful mix of smoke and ashes from a burnt out campfire, iodine, salt and menthol fills the nose (and the entire room). When it calms down a little notes of vanilla, butterscotch, toffee, honey and oak peek through but are more like straws floating around in this liquid hurricane. This is a fantastic nose with a big peat punch.

Mouth: It starts out very medicinal and rowdy. A ton of menthol and some chili fruits sits on the edges and the center is filled with burning rubber, iodine, and a mouthful of dry soil and gravel. The oak is dry and the whole mouth fills with a slight bitterness. There’s no fruitiness whatsoever to be found behind the peat.

Finish: The transition creates a very spicy and bitter hit with the peat and the medicinal notes still as relentless as before. Vanilla and butterscotch can be found far away in the background, like they’re sitting in another glass nearby. The dry earthy notes with the soil and gravel accompanies the oak a long way down to the finish line. This is a fantastic whisky. It’s rowdy and very peaty.

Additional information
This expression was launched in 2004 as a part of Laphroaig’s core range. It’s aged for about 5 years in american ex-bourbon barrels and then finished for several months in smaller 130L quarter casks. It’s supposedly a recreation of how Laphroig tasted some 200 years ago.
